Windows update Service Pack 3 for Windows XP.

WARNING If your computer has an AMD processor the installation of Service pack 3 may cause it to stop working.

(Look at the front of your computer. If it says "Intel Inside", you are OK)

There is a driver included with SP3 that is intended for Intel processors only. I have had this problem on Compaq and HP computers.

If you have already installed SP3 and your computer will not start Windows don't panic. I have recovered from this problem several times without any loss of data. Usually about $40.
