Ubuntu Linux

UBUNTU

Our favorite distribution of the Linux free operating system.

I started out using Version 6.06 and Version 7.10. Later I liked version 8.04 even more. The latest Version is now 9.10. The lastest that I have loaded is 9.10. It really works nicely. It's very easy to get it up and running. I will say that the 9.10 takes a better machine to run it. P4 or better and 512 or more RAM. Everything integrates nicely and it's very usable from the outset.

Ubuntu comes with a nice set of applications to let you work or play on your computer. Internet browser, E-Mail client, Word Processor, Photo Editor, Music Player, are all included. After you have Ubuntu installed you can easily install hundreds of additional applications using your high speed internet connection.

Ubuntu is Free! Free to use, free to install on as many computers as you please, free from license agreements, free from key codes. Tired of Windows? Try Ubuntu.
Linux

Linux is a computer operating system. It was started in 1991 by a Finnish programmer named Linus Torvalds. He wanted the software to remain free for the use of all the people of the world. For several years it was a command line operating system like Microsoft DOS. Over the years programmers around the world have been free to improve it.

Many versions of Linux that are more user friendly have arrived. My Favorite so far is Ubuntu. It came on the scene in 2005. Ubuntu has an ease of use that makes it more popular with less tech-minded people.

These are just my opinions. Other people may not agree. Use your own judgement.

What are the advantages?

  1. The First is ownership. Ubuntu is free. There is no license agreement. Free to use on one or a hundred computers.
  2. Unlike Mocrosoft Windows it has much useful software built in. Open Office comes with Ubuntu.
  3. Ubuntu is very stable. It is nearly virus free. It handles power failures better than Windoze.
  4. Much software is available free via an online download.
And the disadvantages?
  1. It is different to what you have been using. (kind of like your first time in a foreign car) It takes some getting used to.
  2. Not all hardware is compatible. Not all modems, sound cards, and printers are supported.
  3. Software designed for windows will not run on Linux. (you can not just go buy software at Office Depot and go home to use it.)
  4. Dial-up internet is a pain at best. I feel that high speed DSL or cable is a better option. If you are a diehard AOL user you had better stick with Windows.
March 2009 update Dialup does work fine if your ISP (I use Snowcrest)will let you log on. I use KPPP software for dialup. Modem drivers are another story. Intel 536EP and 537ep drivers are good. Most Win modems will not work. Info found Here
